Abstract

The purpose of this study is to grasp effects that knowledge and attitude toward pain after surgery have on pain assessment in surgical patients targeting clinical nurses. The design of a study is a descriptive survey research and subjects are 110 nurses at C university hospital. The research tool of this study is questionnaire that was made on the basis of documentary consideration and prior research. Nurses¡¯ knowledge was used the questionnaire of Hyeon Ju(1999) that translated and modified the measurement tool(Cronbach¡¯s alpha=.82) developed by Watt Watson(1992).
The attitude toward pain was used questionnaire (Cronbach¡¯s alpha=.77) of Heo Hye-gyeong(1994), which was prepared on the basis of literature(Wilder-Smith & Schuler, 1992; Wilson et al, 1992). The collected materials were analyzed by using
SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN Summarizing the results of this study:. 1) In the knowledge level on pain after surgery, the nurses showed the correct answer ratio in averagely 27.78 points/49 points. 2) In nurses¡¯ attitude toward pain after surgery, it was indicated to be high in the item as saying that ¡¯pain management is important in nursing surgical patients¡¯ with 98.0%, in the items as saying that ¡¯pain assessment is necessary after surgery¡¯ and that ¡¯re-assessment is necessary after administering pain-killer to surgical patients¡® with 97.0%. 3) There was no significant difference in nurses¡¯ general characteristics, which have correlation with knwledge level on pain after surgery. The general characteristic, which has correlation with nurses¡¯ attitude toward pain after surgery, was nurses¡¯ final academic background (p=0.049). 4) There was no relationship between knowledge and attitude toward pain. In this study, the correct answer ratio in nurses¡¯ knowledge level on pain after surgery was indicated to be low. Thus, this is demanded the development in specific guidelines and the operation in educational program on the exact medical action and dose in pain-killer.
